Ein digitaler Audioanschluss muss nicht zwingend ein optischer sein. Zwei Verfahren haben sich am Markt durchgesetzt. Zum einen die Übertragung über ein optisches Audiokabel, auch optisches Digitalkabel genannt, zum anderen über elektrische Leiter. Digitale Daten können bei entsprechenden Anschlüssen also auch weiterhin über die vorher analog genutzten Cinch- oder spezielle Koaxial-Kabel übertragen werden.
Doch auch die Übertragung mittels optischer Leiter, auch Lichtwellenleiter (LWL) genannt, hat sich etabliert und wird von vielen Teufel-Produkten unterstützt. Die Schnittstelle wird als TOSLINK (auch S/PDIF) bezeichnet und ermöglicht die Verbindung des Audioplayers mit dem Receiver/Verstärker über ein optisches Audiokabel.
